News: Luxembourg’s Ramborn Cider goes global

Luxembourg’s first cider company has announced that it is launching its award-winning range of 100% juice ciders more widely into global markets, including the UK. Ramborn Cider Company uses only freshly pressed juice from fruits growing in nearby meadow orchards and works directly with more than 100 farmers to improve and maintain meadow orchards in Luxembourg.

The company sources traditional varieties of apples, different from the mostly bittersweet variants found in the western regions of England and France. Most notably, its ciders primarily uses its namesake Rambo apples, an all-rounder apple and a favourite around the village of Born, where the company is based.

These are used alongside Boskoop (a russeted, sharp variety commonly used in cooking), Bohnapful and Luxemburger Triumpf. Ramborn presses all of its fruit at the company’s cider farm where it ferments, matures and blends its ciders and perry.

The company says it is working to revive the rich history and tradition of cider-making in the region, which date back to Roman times. Simultaneously, the team is breathing new life into traditional meadow orchards throughout the country and is adopting truly sustainable farming methods with a focus on biodiversity.

“For a small producer, Ramborn has an extensive range of ciders and perries. Our core range appeals to both cider connoisseurs and consumers who are starting to discover or rediscover their love of cider and are looking for high-quality, interesting and sustainable choices.” said co-founder Adie Kaye.

As well as the core range, Ramborn produces a cellar editions range aimed at the fine-dining world, where it sees a major opportunity in cider and food pairing. This currently includes spirit-barrel-aged still ciders, single tank expressions and will soon feature a quince wine and ice cider.

Kaye says: “We’re really seeing an opening with the discerning foodie crowd, they are very receptive to trying ciders where they may normally have wine – ones with unusual taste profiles that are well paired with the food have been tremendously popular with Michelin starred restaurants across Europe. This is something we’ll look to explore further as we progress”.

The Ramborn range is available in 330ml bottles, 330ml cans and growler re-fill formats which are sustainable and reduce the use of packaging. The ciders and perry are now available across Iceland, Finland, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Germany and the US.

The Ramborn core range:

  • Original Medium dry Cider (5.8% abv)
  • Perry (5.8% abv)
  • Cascade Hopped Cider (7.4% abv)
  • Farmhouse Dry Cider (6.5%)
